The Ministry of Health says it will speed up health care reform in urban and rural areas across the country.

The government will cover the cost of all basic medical services and will list the standard price for certain medications. Wang Mangmang has more details.

Meanwhile, seven ministries are working together to supervise local authorities' efforts in cracking down on medical misconduct. This will help ensure the reforms will be carried out properly at the local level.

There's a link between public health and social well-being. And authorities are determined to step up health reforms, but must first deal with obstacles that could hamper progress.

Health Minister Gao Qiang said "Firstly, the spread of many serious diseases is rapid and wide. Secondly, the development of medical services between urban and rural areas and between different regions is imbalanced, resulting in an increased gap between people's health conditions. Thirdly, medical expenses are soaring too quickly, leaving people unable to afford it. And finally, there is a tense relationship between hospitals and patients with disputes escalating."

In response to these problems, the Health Ministry is formulating a basic health care system. The system will provide free health services where patients will only be charged for medications. The government aims to give all people access to the new health care system.

And a basic medication system is also being formulated. The government will select medicines with standard prices that are mandatory, effective, and affordable to the public.

Producing and marketing of these basic medicines will be tightly regulated to ensure people get access to them.
